DIGITAL ARCHIVE

01

Brief

The Caos project (Catastrophes of Southern Italy) was commissioned by the University of Catania, with the goal of cataloguing media related to various natural phenomena such as eruptions, storms, landslides, and more.

02

Client

The project was commissioned by the University of Catania, specifically by the Department of Humanities.

03

Team

I handled the entire UX usability and the full UI, from individual components and their functionality on the site to branding aspects. Two developers contributed to the creation of the project.

CAOS

Challenge

The biggest challenge for me was creating an internal design kit consistent with the branding I wanted, in order to build a platform that felt extremely modern while conveying the idea of an archive in an elegant and easy-to-use way.

CAOS

The aim of the project

The goal of the project was to provide students and researchers with a research platform where media and real-world phenomena intersected, allowing them to search not only through textual archives but also spatially, using maps.

CAOS

Approach and solution

The approach focused on creating an archive visually aligned with a brutalist aesthetic, reflecting the political message of the site, and on presenting the documents and timeline in a simple and intuitive way. The website is designed for a wide range of users, all united by the desire to explore documents and files related to Berlinguer’s life and his travels.

CAOS

Final outcome

In my view, the final site is extremely modern and easy to navigate, assigning a unique color and icon to each phenomenon, reflecting the geometric simplicity of the chosen branding. The archive can be explored both as a listing and via a map, along with other sections related to creators and their stories.

Approach and solution

After creating a moodboard, I moved on to designing various assets and components, culminating in a high-fidelity prototype in Figma.
